While Grenache is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world, only in a handful of areas does it reach its full potential. The hills west of Paso Robles is quickly establishing itself as one of these special areas. At 100% Grenache, the 2018 Maven is absolutely remarkable. It manages to capture the incredibly complex range of the varietal, from its darker more brooding earthy and spicy qualities to its graceful more ethereal feminine attributes. Somehow neither is overshadowed by the other as they shine in perfect harmony. We attribute this to the long and consistent growing season which delivered fruit of optimal maturity and impeccable balance. Once again following a brief cold soak, the fermentation takes place utilizing only native yeast. Roughly 15% of the Grenache from 2018 was fermented 100% whole cluster. Gentle punch downs are done throughout the fermentation. At dryness it was basket pressed to 300L French Oak barrels of which 35% were new to complete ML. The wine remained on its lees for the duration of its 20 months of barrel aging. The wine was then bottled unfined and unfiltered and aged for an additional 10 months before release. While the Maven ages beautifully and the 2018 vintage will no doubt impress for a decade or more, open ahead of time or decant to enjoy this beauty in its youth.
